Q: I'm getting a lot of spam. What can I do about it?
A: Your account comes with spam filtering abilities. To enable it, plesae do the following:
- Login to your control panel at: http://www.your_domain.com.com/cpanel/
Under the “Email” heading click on “Spam Assassin”
- Enable Spam Assassin as well as your Spam Box if they are not already enabled.
- Enabling the Spam Box feature will cause all mail marked by Spam Assassin as spam to be delivered to a separate mail box called 'spam'.
You easily can use Horde to check messages that are routed to this box. (Just click on "horde" when you log into webmail and then check your "spam" folder)
If you wish to use pop3 to check the spam box, just add "/spam" (without the quotes) to the end of your pop3 login. (Example: joe@your_domain.com/spam)
- If you find you are still getting a lot of spam you can set your filter level even higher by clicking on the “Configure Spam Assassin” link.
- From there you can set emails to always whitelist or always blacklist. You can also adjust the filter level if you are still getting too much spam or if not enough spam is being caught. To do this change the “required hits” field to a lower or higher number. (A lower number increases the strictness of the filter)
- You can also set “Spam Assassin” to rewrite the subjects of messages to indicate that they are spam by changing the “rewrite_subject” box to a setting of “1”.
- The spam assassin screens in the control panel will give you even further information on how the filters can be used.
- Although the system is not perfect, (spammers are always trying to find ways around the system) most users report that spam levels are reduced considerably.
Q: How can I automatically sort my mail in different Outlook folders when I receive it?
- In Outlook go to Tools > Rules & Alerts
- Click on "new rule".
- Select the "Start form a blank rule" radio checkbox
- In the "Step 1" box highlight "Check messages when they arrive", then click "Next" at the bottom of the window.
- On the next screen, you will see a list of ways in which you can filter your incoming email. Choose the method you would like to filter by: For example if you would like filter messages that have a certain subject into a differerent folder, do the folllowing:
Click the "With the specific Words in the Subject" checkbox. In the "Step 2" box click on the word "specific words". (it should be highlighted) You can then type in the subject words to apply the rule to. In this case type in {spam?} since that is how the server is marking those messages
- Click "Next"
- On the next screen click the "Move it to a specified folder" checkbox.
- In the "Step 2" box click on the word "specified". (it should be highlighted) You can then choose the folder to move those messages into. (You may want to create a new folder to hold the spam)
